When I first started my business, I knew, of course, that I needed to have a strong website. The internet has become the main marketing arena, and a business without a beautiful and well-organized website is as good as dead. In fact, many customers won’t even bother visiting a business in person if their website isn’t up to their standards. However, just having a great looking website isn’t enough. You need to make sure people are able to find them when they need the goods or services you have to offer. This is where I ran into trouble. I had a stunning website that showed off everything I had, but how could I make people see it?

Think about it. When you need something, the first thing you do is jump onto Google and do a search, stopping at the first few websites that come up as results. This is the key. We need our websites to be on that very first page of search results each and every time a potential customer comes calling. However, getting our sites on that first page can be more of a challenge than many business owners expect. Understanding search engine optimization will be key when it comes to promoting our sites.
SEO marketing means that you are taking your website, your specific pages, your links, and making it so that search engines will take note and place it higher up in the results page. It means you have to have a thorough understanding of the way clients look for products, what kind of keywords they use, what kind of articles they are searching for, and much more. Unfortunately, this can get pretty complicated, pretty fast, which is why we’ve made a list of tips and tricks you can keep in mind that will help guarantee your site ends up on that first results page before you know it.
Have a Well Thought Out Plan
The first thing we’ll need to do to ensure our business is listed at the top of the results is to create the perfect website. Of course, there is a wide range of factors that need to be ironed out. We need to understand, without a shadow of a doubt, what services we want to provide our customers, what our goals are for our business, and what makes us different than all the rest. We have to take our ideas and expectations and format them into simple, straightforward phrases. Once, we have that, we should try doing a Google keyword search. This will help us figure out what client’s who are looking for our goods or services are typically putting into a Google search, allowing us to place those keywords throughout our site.
Once this is done, we’ll need to think about formatting. The best websites are ones which are simple and well thought out. For example, we really don’t want to have more than 250 words per page, including our home page. An overabundance of information can work against us when it comes to getting our site at the top. At the same time, we need to make sure we communicate what our business is all about effectively enough to inspire customers to see more. The wording we use and the overall language of our site can make a world of difference. We must make sure we find that perfect balance so that our site can get us the results we’re looking for.
Avoid Standard Issues
Did you know that the speed that your site loads can actually dramatically impact where your site falls in the results page? Google doesn’t like recommending sites that won’t load, and so there is a long list of issues including speed that you’ll want to take into consideration when designing your website. Some of the most prominent will be loading speed, broken links, repetitive content, and unoptimized pages.
An optimized page is one where important keywords and beneficial content is shown. Having a great homepage simply isn’t enough. If your website has pages and pages of useless information, you’ll be much more likely to be skipped over by the Google bots. Make sure you keep every single page full of important information and links that not only work but make sense so that your site can be considered something worth recommending.
Work with Other Small Businesses in Your Area
Did you know that the more your website link comes up in other areas, the more likely you’ll be to have your page move up the results list? When a site is frequently popping up all over the place, Google is much more willing to place it high up in the recommendations. Google likes popularity and so it will choose to promote pages it believes will draw a larger audience. Working with fellow local business owners will be a great opportunity in this regard. Find out if some other local business sites have a blog or even social media posts where they could include a link to your business in good faith. Offer to do the same for them so that you can both benefit.
At the end of the day, the more a site is linked out, the better their rankings will be, and the stronger the likelihood of attracting new customers. It’s a win/win situation for everyone involved. However, if you can’t find any other local businesses to get involved with, an issue I certainly ran into, then make sure that your site is listed through local newspaper websites and local virtual magazines. This was a massive advantage for me and the more exposure your site can get, the better off you’ll be.
Work on Getting Reviews
Have you found your business listed on Facebook pages or on rating sites such as Yelp or Angie’s List? Encourage your customers to leave reviews and recommendations. Not only will this information be critical to you and the growth of your business, but it will also give your site a much better chance of moving up the search rankings. Customers want to buy goods and services from businesses they know are reliable. So, the more highly rated your business is on these sites, the more likely Google will be to promote you.
Images and Videos
Over the last couple of years, social media sites have made it so that images and videos are the main forms of communication and content creation around the world. Businesses need to start taking advantage of this. A great way to promote your site online is to add images and videos with specific keywords in the description.
Many clients are now searching for videos or pictures to find the content they are looking for, opening up a whole new area for you to invest your time. Are you hoping to build up the customer base for your new restaurant? Rather than just posting your menu on your website, try adding pictures of your menu to your social media so that when people search for what you have to offer, you have double the chance of coming up in their results.
Take a Look at Competitors
While copying off the idea of a business right down the street from you might be frowned upon and lead to a backlash, copying off of a successful virtual competitor is something completely different. Try typing a business similar to your own into the search bar and see what results pop up at the top time and time again. Taking a look at what they are doing to get listed first can help place your business in a similar position. You may want to consider what kind of content they have on their homepage, how many index pages they have posted, how many backlinks they have throughout the site, and so forth. The more you’re able to learn from the best, the stronger you can make your own website.
Take Advantage of Google My Business
Google likes promoting pages it is already aware of, and so every small business owner should take advantage of tools such as Google My Business. This allows you to directly list your business with the search engine, providing it with your website link, address, phone number, hours, and much more. You can even leave a business description, photos, and videos to really give your business the full representation it deserves. Take a few minutes to update this powerful tool and watch as your business soars to the top of the results.
Having a successful business in today’s global market means having a strong virtual presence. However, the most beautiful website in the world won’t do you much good if no one stops by to visit it. As a business owner, you need to understand how to promote your site in a way that will get it listed high in search engine rankings. Keep these tips and tricks in mind so that you can move your site up in the results today.
